Exhibition of family photos retrieved from tsunami debris in Miyagi

January 30th, 2012By Category: Uncategorized

An exhibition of photos recovered from tsunami debris in Miyagi Prefecture is being held at the Akaaka Gallery in Tokyo’s Nishi-Azabu area until Feb 11.

The Lost & Found Project shows more than 1,500 photos of everyday life, including weddings, family events and scenes from everyday life. The photos were selected by photographer Munemasa Takahashi who had spent time in the Miyagi city of Yamamoto, retrieving and cleaning photos and restoring them to their owners if they could be found.

The owners of the photos being shown at the Akaaka gallery were not able to be located or identified; many are now faded and spoiled by bacteria absorption.

Three kinds of posters featuring photos from the exhibition are on sale for 1,000 yen, with 70% of the proceeds going to help tsunami survivors in Yamamoto.

The gallery is open from 12 noon until 7 p.m. daily except Mondays and Tuesdays.
