【DABURU  ダブる】

You can probably tell from its sound, but this katakana word is taken from the English word “double.” It differs in that in Japanese, it’s used only as a verb, but its meaning is also derived from the English word. In Japanese, it has the meaning of “to compound” or “to duplicate” and has a negative tone.

部下:ホントですね。さっそく電話して訂正してもらいます。

Kaisha de

Jyoushi: Kono seikyuusho, yoku mitara, zenkai noto dabutte seikyuusareteruyo.

Buka: Honto desune.  Sassoku denwa shite teisei shite moraimasu.

At work

Supervisor: If you take a close look at this invoice, you’ll see that they duplicated a charge from last time!

Subordinate: They did, didn’t they! I’ll call them at once and have it corrected.

眼科で

医者:どうされました?

患者:最近、モノがダブって見えるんです。

Ganka de

Isha: Dou saremashita?

Kanja: Saikin, mono ga dabutte mieru’n desu.

At the eye doctor

Doctor: What seems to be the problem?

Patient: I’ve been seeing double recently.

Among students, “daburu” has taken on the meaning of “to repeat a year of school.”

学生A:あの人、20歳には見えないよね。

学生B:だって、高校で2年ダブって、大学でも1年ダブってるらしいから。

Gakusei A: Ano hito, hatachi niwa mienai yone.

Gakusei B: Datte, koukou de ninen dabutte, daigaku demo ichinen dabutteru rashii kara.

Student A: That person doesn’t look twenty years old!

Student B: That’s because I hear he had to repeat a couple years in high school―and even a year of college.
