Many department stores and shopping malls have New Year bargain sales starting Jan 2. This is when shops everywhere sell “fukubukuro” (lucky bags). “Fukubukuro are sealed and you never what’s in them until you buy one. The value of the items is usually twice the price you pay for the bag. “Fukubukuro” can range in price from a few thousand yen to millions of yen, depending on the store.
The sidewalk outside Shibuya 109 is a popular spot for young girls to swap their “fukubukuro” contents on Jan 2.
