Interview with Chad Johnson: Martial Arts Instructor and Author of the 28 Day Deadline Workout

Chad Johnson's 28 Day Deadline Workout

Chad Johnson is a personal trainer (ACE-CPT), Strength Coach (NSCA-CSCS), Youth Fitness Expert (IYCA-YFS) and the owner and head instructor of True Way Martial Arts in Sarasota, Florida. He recently released his Ebook, The 28 Day Deadline Workout, and as everyone tends to bulk up over the holidays, I thought this would be a great chance to catch up with Chad. (Pictured on the cover of the book).

How long have you been training in Martial Arts?

I had been a three-sport athlete back in high school (football, wrestling and track), and since I hadn’t grown in height or size much since I was fourteen (only 5′ 7″ and about 150 pounds), my childhood dream of playing football for the University of Michigan wasn’t about to happen.  The void of no sports or major fitness programs after it being a daily part of my regimen for years had hit me hard. I saw that I could take martial arts classes at my college, Michigan State University, and thought “How cool is that?! I can learn martial arts AND get college credits for it!  I’m in!!!”  Truth be told, I walked in and was hooked on day one. Only reason I left was to go pursue my fitness career and eventually my dream of running my own martial arts schools down here in Florida.  Going on 12 straight years in the martial arts on January 8th…

What inspired you to create this program?

2. I was determined to at least create something of value that would be scientifically sound and yet practical enough for people to put into action.  Along the way I got inspired to integrate the mind, physical and spiritual sides of training so people can put things into practice and optimize their training and ultimately their lives. Since I saw that obesity and weight management is such a significant issue here in the US, it only made sense to focus this book on addressing that problem.

What do you think makes this book special or distinct?

3. This book is very thorough and detailed.  I went the extra mile to put in tons of resources that would actually help make the process of starting a training program easier.  I address the mental side of training by teaching the habits that lead to a lifestyle of fitness and results through martial arts philosophy.  I included actual recommendations for quality protein, fat and carbohydrate sources, a balanced and highly-effective exercise training program which requires absolutely no fitness equipment, a guide for approaching a balanced diet that still results in healthy and accelerated fat loss, a calculator for determining appropriate amounts of intake on a daily and even individual meal basis, and much, much more.  I would almost say it’s too detail-oriented and step-by-step rather than not organized enough.

How often do you usually train, yourself?

I train about 6-7 days a week, but currently I tend to alternate days of martial arts training and stretching with days of lifting and cardio/conditioning. Truthfully it’s the limited time in the day that keeps me from training as much as I would if time were no object.  Oh yeah, and I’d like to stay married to my wife…so I kind of have to limit my training time a bit to stay in the good graces.

Do you spend more time in the gym or doing martial arts?

In the months and years to come [I’d like to spend] a lot more time training martial arts, especially since I now know how to effectively do the fitness “thing” in far less time than when I was younger.  But I have an appreciation and respect for both sides.

  • This is very encouraging. It’s an advantage that Chad had been trained with martial arts, that way, this program will definitely be effective and teach one how to become as disciplined as him. Thanks for sharing!
