Japanese comic beer

October 6th, 2010By Category: Culture

Japan Trends first spotted this in a downtown Tokyo supermarket, a beer that combines Japan’s love of drinking with another of the country’s great passions, manga.

As the consumer site notes, the Sapporo black-label branded beer has been released before in southern Japan and now the company has taken the product nationwide for everyone to enjoy a middle-of-the-road quality brew inside cans adorned with comic motifs (while stocks last).

The manga on the side features an image of Ryoma Sakamoto and the beer is the latest in what Japan Trends dubs the Ryoma industry – a long long line of products that tap into the mystique of the famous revolutionary samurai of the Meiji restoration. Sakamoto was a leading figure of his time, helping shape the events which took Japan away from its medieval foundations and into modern statehood and his daring has been the stuff of legend ever since.

The popularity of NHK drama Ryoden starring Masaharu Fukuyama sparked an even bigger boom of interest, one that spawned a diverse cottage industry of manufacturers and retailers selling tie-in goods that include everything from figures, to sports drinks, golf clubs and wallets amongst others.

With that drama now coming to an end, now is the last chance for manufacturers to earn a few more yen on tap.
