Japan’s top products for 2011?

December 1st, 2010By Category: Shopping

Last week we took a look at what advertising goliath Dentsu found to be Japan’s top products of 2010. A hit list that they gauged from the products and services that scored well across three categories — “recognition,” “have/had interest” and “is/was popular.” Perhaps unsurprising given the recent press, smartphones came out top.

In reponse to that one reader sent in another list – this time a prediction for what will be the top Japanese products of 2011.

The list this time appeared in the Nikkei Trendy, a worthwhile business companion for anyone looking to follow the market winds in Japan as the Nikkei’s reach and editorial quality ensure that those it features are based on a solid breakdown of marketing and business strategies across Japan’s corporate world.

You can find more here, but here is our summary of the top 10:

1. GPS-based games – this ties in nicely with what we said about iPhone and Android development coming to Japan.

2. Portable Beauty Products – Does not bode well for the success of Tokyo Metro’s poster campaign.

3. Home Appliance Linked Smart phones – something NTT first introduced to us here.

4. Fishing Equipment – appears back to nature continues to be of interest to urbanites.

5. Luxury Bullet Train Tours – such as the one a GaijinPot writer took to Hakone.

6. Notepad Sized Tablets – following the success of iPad in Japan.

7. Raw Natural Product Based Cosmetics – this one is apparently imported from Korea.

8. Nissan Leaf, and Electric Car Conversions – We looked at how electric cars are changing the auto-market here.

9. Vending Machines that Proactively Sell – and may even replace conbini staff.

10. Shoes that Aid Body Toning on Commute – Another import, this one from the US.

Now we just have to wait another 12 months to see how accurate this list will be.  In the meantime, you can get some more product tips and other happenings here. Thanks to @tokyorich for the tip.

  • I’m curious and looking forward to the Luxury Bullet Train Tours. As the name implies, I don’t see it becoming affordable in the coming year but hopefully its popularity will increase in order to attract more tourists and even locals to check it out. And I think the Natural Based cosmetics are starting to get popular even in other countries.
