Help for Geos Staff

April 21st, 2010By Category: Uncategorized

In anticipation of the uncertain news involving Geos we hope to keep readers and job hunters updated through the GaijinPot Blogs. For all those looking to quickly find new employment we recommend checking through the positions on GaijinPot.  Access our Japan Jobs page here.

If you are confident in your Japanese ability you may wish to also look at our sister site, Ecentral.jp. We are currently in an employer’s market. As job seekers flood into competition for fewer jobs, some employers will inevitably develop an attitude that prospective employees must be the “cream of the crop” with very little interest in wasting time on interviewing less qualified candidates.

To avoid being classified as the later, here are a few tips from GaijinPot:
Write a Cover Letter
Employers are looking for reasons to skip over resumes.
Dress for Success
If you are hearing this for the first time, you are already out of the race.
Be Flexible
Maybe a couple of years on the Oki Islands of Shimane may not be so bad.
Network
A lot of companies are being bombarded with resumes at the moment. A personal introduction by a friend could do wonders.
Be Quick The “official” hiring season for English teachers and staff in general is over, however there remain a small number of schools that have urgent positions to fill.  In addition, it is possible that positions will become available after a month or two as some new employees find they can not work in their new environments.  If you have the wherewithal to stay around for a few months, you might want to plan to take advantage of that.

Ex-GEOS teachers waiting for their (illegally) delayed 離職票, it IS possible to start your registration for unemployment insurance now. My 借り受けつけ started yesterday, so by 5/12 the registration will be done, between 5/13 and 6/2 I'll attend the 説明会 when my 離職票 arrives, and 6/3 will be the first payment date. 11 days earlier than if you wait for the documents to arrive. Please let others know!

“We are currently in an employer’s market” That's B.S., for ENglish teachers its an employee's market. THere aren't enough talented teachers to go around. In one day of applications I got 3 job offers.

    2. You will not be be paid any bonuses or holiday paid you are owed.
    3. Your May salary will be very small (23rd to 30th of April). (if you get paid)
    4. Your next full salary payment will not be until the 15th of June! (if you get paid)
    5. You will have to work with the managers that lied to you and your students and will continue to lie to you and your students.
    6. End of July you are sacked again and have to agree to new work conditions if you want to continue working.
    7. You as a teacher have zero respect and value with the new company. The new company has already guaranteed to pay rent owed to the landlords but will not pay money owed to teachers.

By returning to work all you are doing is supporting the very people have shafted you and lied to you.
Your jobs are not secure and you will be shafted and lied to again at the end of July.

    Best of luck!
