No. of dead or missing tops 16,000 as infrastructure being restored

Vital infrastructure was gradually being restored Friday in areas hit a week earlier by the mega earthquake, while the fate of tens of thousands of people remained unknown.

Details Emerge On Workers Toiling Inside Nuclear Plant

As the battle to tame the nuclear crisis entered its seventh day, many Japanese turned their attention to the fate of the workers inside.

These anonymous workers, some employees of Tokyo Electric Power Co. and other contract workers making 9,000 yen a day ($110), migrate from one nuclear facility to another—and now are exposed to dangerously high levels of radiation inside the stricken plant.

Acima Provides Hotline Over IM For Non-Japanese Disaster Victims

Japan based international-business consulting company Acima is offering emergency hotline over Skype and MSN Messenger for 24 hours in 15 languages, by using its own resource and forming volunteers from around the world.

Donations

Tokyo is accepting donations: diapers, heat pads, paper cups, saran wrap, water, some baby/sanitary/eye care products.  Find out more on the Tokyo government site (Japanese only).

Economy update

The yen is getting battered in international markets, however the G7 have agreed to take co-ordinated action to stop this and stabilize the value of Japan’s currency.

Fukushima update

Power lines to the plant have been repaired and TEPCO is now in the process of bringing the reactors back online with these restored power lines. Once that is done, the status of the cooling pumps will need to be assessed and then the reactor control system should be able to come back online. This covers reactors 1-4. Reactors 5 and 6 are warming but were offline before the earthquake struck and are not being treated as the priority.

Donations and Support

Second Harvest Japan is seeking food and supply donations for the people in the earth-quake-affected areas. Please see below for the list of what we need now. Thank you very much for your generous support!

Black outs

Last night’s unscheduled black outs in Tokyo were adverted thanks to everybody doing their bit in saving energy.  Be sure to keep contributing to the efforts and remember that there are people in tsunami hit regions with no electricity and no shelter.

Foreign Media coverage

The foreign media has contributed to the sense of panic amongst the community here.  Although it is best to always take care, please also be sure of your sources.  See these screen captures to compare how the BBC and the Huffington Post headlined yesterday’s aerial water dumping operation.

Leaving Japan

The first option for leaving Japan should remain commercial routes. Commercial flights continue to operate to and from Japan.  Foreign nationals with commercial flight bookings should continue to use these flights and you should continue to make reservation and other arrangements with your airline as usual.  However, specially chartered flights are now being made by a number of countries.

TEPCO to try and restore power

Yesterday saw 2 military operations to get more water on the failing reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant.  Today, TEPCO will follow that up by trying to restore electricity to the cooling systems so that the overall temperature there can be brought down. TEPCO are hoping to get power to reactors 1 & 2 today and 3 & 4 by the 20th.

    Hello People of Japan,
I feel sorrowful for your pain and suffering. I hope that you fully recover and that your leaders learn from these mistakes in building these very dangerous Nuclear Plants. Here is some information that I have learned from living near the American Nuclear Plant accident at 3 Mile Island, Harrisburg, Pa. U.S.A. March 28-30, 1979
Water Cooled Nuclear Plants such as 3 Mile Island, Harrisburg, Pa. and those in Japan have Primary and Secondary Water cooling Loops. If these loops are breached then a disaster may occur when emergency cooling Fails as now we see. .
The Primary cooling also acts as an EXHAUST SYSTEM for the Plant.
Since the Reactor Core is a closed, pressurized chamber, it must be vented as well as cooled or it may explode because radioactive gas is created during the nuclear reaction. That information is from a Cornell University Nuclear Physicist and Engineer on March 30,1979 at a Public Rally on the Ithaca commons, Ithaca, N.Y.
.Pressure relief valves in the Reactor Core exhaust Radioactive Particles and Gases 24/7 into the Primary Loop and the Radiation is discharged out to the environment through the Cooling Towers. This Systematic, Daily Radiation release contributes to human sexual sterility and possibly a weakened immune system, resulting in susceptibility to certain viruses and other diseases of unknown origin and cancer. Radiation treatment for cancer results in a non functioning human immune system. The Patient, Victim is susceptible to any disease for which they previously had developed immunity In addition to the immediate harm from radiation release, the long term consequences are not understood by a propagandized public. Radiation degrades through 1/2 lifes, many! Plutonium, P-239’s 1/2 life is 24,500 years and must experience 20 -40 1/2 lifes to degrade. 24,500 years x 40 cycles is a very long time to safe guard materials that will end your life if touched. Plutonium is an element created in the Nuclear process.
I was within 70 Miles of Harrisburg, Pa. for 9 years prior to and after the 3 Mile Is. Accident on March 28, 1979
ALTERNATIVELY, I have been told by a Weyerhaeuser Plywood Official in Honolulu, Hi. that their Hawaii plant produces their own electricity by using the “ELECTROLYSIS OF SEAWATER for HYDROGEN GENERATION. Most Internet sites SCOFF at this as a not feasible however Weyerhaeuser was using this technology in 1990.

    Love to you
