More than 50% of foreigners living in Tokyo said they would stay in the city no matter what happens during the current crisis, according to a poll this week by our sister-site, online newspaper Japan Today (www.japantoday.com).
Last week, after a number of embassies advised their nationals to leave the Tokyo area due to a perceived threat of radiation, the immigration bureau was swamped with foreigners seeking re-entry visas so they could leave the country and return at a later date.
According to the Japan Today poll, of 1,149 respondents (as of March 23), 585 said they were staying in Tokyo, 226 said they had already left, 129 said they were going to leave as soon as they could, while the rest said they hadn’t decided yet.
As for how prepared residents were for an earthquake, another poll conducted by Japan Today revealed that 73% of respondents did not have an emergency kit prepared in the event of an emergency.
