To try and help you better sift through the news and understand what is going on and where in Japan as we approach the second week since the earthquake first struck off the coast of Miyagi ken, we have gathered together a collection of stories from the English-language press.

Top Stories:

A high-level radiation leak detected Thursday at one of six troubled reactors at the crisis-hit Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant indicates possible damage to the reactor’s vessel, pipes or valves, the government’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency said today.

In other news to come from the plant, 3 Fukushima workers are in hospital with radiation sickness.

Residents living in the 20-30km zone from the plant who were previously advised to stay indoors and take precautions against radiation are now being asked to leave the area. Note that this is on a voluntary basis and is to help with living conditions rather than because of any direct threat.

On a more positive note, the IMF and G7 group of major industrialized countries believe that Japan has ample resources to finance its rebuilding. The government plans to submit a quake-relief budget by late April.

Despite the fact, as Mainichi is reporting, that foreign arrivals at Narita airport have fallen 60% since the quake. There is already plenty of activity in the economy with some of the best and brightest minds taking some direct action. One of the major initiatives is called the Kibow project and you can find out more here.

Many companies have donated money, time and resources. Find our how you can get involved here.

Update.

One of the relief organizations offering help, Second Harvest, has posted a report from their recent trip to Sendai.
