Have you seen this short escalator in Japan? It is said to be “the shortest escalator in the world” and you can find it in an underground shopping area in Kawasaki station. The number of steps is only 5.

There are stairs next to the elevator and it seems more efficient to use them.  Some foreign people who saw the escalator have remarked how lazy Japanese people are, and wonder why Japanese people want to have escalators everywhere, even at places where they are not necessary.

Look at some comments from “The laziness is awe inspiring” in reddit.com.

There are also short escalators inside Tokyo station too.

If you are healthy and childless, you may think this is ridiculous, but if you have a baby stroller, escalators are a godsend.  Not to mention the elderly and anyone, well, who finds stairs–even 5 steps–to be a painful challenge.

It is also helpful for the mothers with babies using baby strollers with lots of stuff in it.
I think Japanese people are not lazy, time is very precious for them. They use the escalators and walk through the right side of it, they can cut the time to half when using the stairs.
