Oden is a popular Japanese dish, containing all kinds of ingredients cooked in a special broth of soy sauce, sugar, sake, etc.

However, a new type of oden, “sweets oden” (980 yen), has lately attracted attention.

At first glance, it looks like any other oden dish. You see steam rising from the small pot, and expect it to contain winter veggies, eggs, and fish cakes. But instead, this pot has fruit such as slices of apple, orange and kiwifruit in the broth. The broth is made from an oolong tea base with fragrant olive wine, and other spices. Besides sliced fruit, rice-flour dumplings and sweet red bean jam dumplings are also in the pot.

This new type of dessert oden was created by a pastry chef at Jiyugaoka Sweets Forest, located in a dessert-themed mini-mall in Jiyugaoka, Tokyo.

The dessert oden will be sold for a limited time until march 14 as part of the “HOT! Hotto sweets 2012” campaign.
