ため

Meaning:　”same age”

This word is used mainly by young people, but originally it was a gambling term meaning “Zorome” (same number of eyes). “Zorome” was said when two dice showed the same number. (If you wish to learn more, watch samurai and Yakuza movies like “Zatoichi” and “Battles Without Honor and Humanity.”)

When people are shocked hearing a Japanese learner say this word, this may be the reason why.

例）

飲み会で
A: Bさんっていくつ？
B: 25だけど。
A: じゃ、私とためじゃないですか！私も25です～。

Nomi-kai de
A: B-san’tte ikutsu?
B: Nijyu-go dakedo.
A: Jaa, watashito tame janaidesuka!  Watashi mo nijyu-go desu.

English Translation:

Example)

At a drinking party
A: B-san, how old are you?
B: I’m 25.
A: That’s the same age as me! I’m also 25!
